Crafting Beauty from Wax and Flame

I have already created the sculpture in my mind. I know the lines, the form, the flow of energy. I confront a cold block of wax and with ancient tools and torch, I impose my will upon it to create something new, something more beautiful. I sculpt with fire!

Enraged and violent

Betrayed by autumn’s falling

Cries the blackbird trapped

Broad wings of shadow

Cast O’er brilliant azure blue

Spy the eagle soar

Proud and mighty cock

Ruffled feathers wintered so

Screams indignity

"Angele" series

I find myself as an artist often welcoming the little joys of circumstance.

So early on when this “dancer” fell off my sculpting stand, her outstretched waxen arm now pointing in the opposite direction,

I conceived a new dancer. “Angele”.

So beautiful and graceful was she that the Gods took notice and gave her wings whereby she might reside in heaven.

Yet she longs to dance upon the earth. This longing mixed with what I imagine any messenger of God would feel,

the weight of man’s sorrow and pain tempered by hope for his enlightenment, perhaps accounts for the tinge of melancholy in her expression.
